Jimmy Young was born on November 16th, 1948. Young was born and raised in Philadelphia
and began boxing at 14 years of age. He got into boxing after acquiring a new transistor radio.
Young was on his way home from school when three older kids took the new radio from him.

"Right then and there, I decided it was time I learned to defend myself," Young recalled. He
started boxing in the amateur ranks and went on to win two New Jersey Golden Gloves titles.
