Larry Holmes KO5 Scott Frank
September 10, 1983
The story of Holmes’ 167th successful defense, at Harrah’s Hotel Casino, is one of guilt. The WBC heavyweight
champion, 44-0 (31) felt guilty about fighting at all because he told his wife he’d quit. “We’re negotiating now,” he
said concerning future fights. NBC felt guilty about airing the title fight on prime time. How hard was it for analyst Dr.
Ferdie Pacheco to remain composed when Marv Albert asked him if Frank had any chance at all? Of course NBC
will feel much less guilt if the ratings turn out to be as high as they had anticipated. And Scott Frank had to feel some
guilt for accepting $350,000 for a fight few thought he deserved, don’t you think?
Don’t feel guilty for spending your Saturday night in front of the tube, however. Larry Holmes is quality entertainment
because he is a great fighter. Unfortunately, Scott Frank 20-1-1 (14) , is suited for the New Jersey clubshow circuit,
not primetime TV.
The fight? Exactly what everyone expected. Holmes closed Frank’s eye with his jab, stunned him with his right cross
and crushed him with his right uppercut. The final blow, an uppercut with Frank in his own corner, included a thumb
in the eye, but that’s nothing new for Holmes (Scott Ledoux and Earnie Shavers suffered the same fate.)
The highlight of the night was the post fight press conference. Holmes was finished answering questions, and in effort
to promote his next defense, he began clowning with scheduled opponent Marvis Frazier and dad Smokin’ Joe.
Screaming in Ali-like fashion, Holmes grabbed a towel and threw it at Marvis. Uninitiated in big fight type, Marvis
wasn’t sure how to react. He leaned over to Joe and asked if he could throw the towel back.
We hope he’s meaner in the ring in November.
