Well, so much for Malignaggi being a “live dog” in this match-up.

Hatton dominated from the second round on until Buddy McGirt saved his charge from further
humiliation. Malignaggi was stunned in the second and from there it was like watching a Mack truck
speeding downhill. Malignaggi simply did not have the fire power to keep the onrushing Hatton off
him.

Hatton had too much experience and was far too strong for the feisty Brooklynite. He arguably
dominated Malignaggi more convincingly than Miguel Cotto did.

Hatton is clearly the best 140 pounder in the world.

“I enjoyed it this time better than I did last time—that’s for sure,” Hatton said. “Nobody will beat me
at junior welterweight—nobody.”

Hatton has stated that he has employed the services of Floyd Mayweather Sr. to prolong his career
in much the same way that Arturo Gatti and Marco Antonio Barrera did when they reached their
30s. A style change wasn’t necessary against the pea-shooting Malignaggi, however.

Hatton’s left hook landed on Malignaggi’s chin as if it were a honing device. For all of his slick
moves and style, Malignaggi has some serious defensive deficiencies that were all too noticeable in
this bout. But it wasn’t easy as it looked.

“I was getting frustrated during the fight because Paulie was a lot tougher fighter than you would
think,” Hatton said.

An interesting exchange took place between Harold Lederman and Larry Merchant. Lederman stated
that he was a New York native, he had followed Malignaggi’s career from the start and was
surprised that Malignaggi was being handled so easily. He said “This isn’t Malignaggi in there.
Something is wrong.” Merchant didn’t miss a beat and put down Lederman’s assertion “Its cause
and effect! Hatton is
making him look bad.”

Hatton looks for the winner of Pacquiao and Delahoya. He is back in the mix while I don’t expect
Malignaggi to contend against the top fighters again.
