Mayweather. Paulie Malignaggi, on the other hand, actually grew in stature after a brutal defeat to
Miguel Cotto. This is one of those bouts where there is no clear cut favorite and I confess I’m hard
pressed to pick a winner. But I’ll break the fight down as follows:

EXPERIENCE: Hatton is 44-1 with 31 knockouts. He turned pro in 1997. He won the IBF junior
welterweight title with an 11th round stoppage of Kostya Tszyu. Annexed the WBA junior welter
crown with a 9th round stoppage of Carlos “Golem” Maussa before winning the WBA welterweight
crown with a disputed decision over Luis Collazo. Has fought 8 former or current world champions.
Malignaggi is 25-1 with 5 knockouts. He made is pro debut in July of 2001. Won the IBF Junior
welter title by decision over Lovemore N’dou. Has followed this victory with tightly contested
decisions over Herman Ngoudjo and Lovemore N’dou in a rematch. Has only fought 2 former or
current world champions.  EDGE: HATTON

AGE AND PHYSICAL EQUIPMENT: Hatton is 30 years old and stands 5’7.” He doesn’t seem to
possess the style suited for a long career. Recently enlisted the services of Floyd Mayweather Sr. to
train him. Applies pressure with a mauling and often ugly fighting style. Has a great left hook to the
body. Malignaggi is 27 years old and stands 5’8”. Powder puff puncher who uses slick moves to get in
and out. Can shut out second tier opposition. Seems to possess a solid chin. A lot less mileage on him
than Hatton. EDGE: MALIGNAGGI

INTANGIBLES: Hatton’s enlistment of Floyd Mayweather Sr. is a head scratcher. His long time
trainer, Bill Graham, has retired due to arthritis or something.  Malignaggi is on the way up and seems
to love the spotlight a la Hector Camacho. He has a brash Brooklyn attitude that contrasts with Hatton’
s blue collar persona. Mayweather was brash and cocky and clearly got into Hattons' head.
Malignaggi may be able to turn the same trick. EDGE: MALIGNAGGI

POWER: Hatton doesn’t have one punch knockout power. His stoppages come through attrition. His
left hook to the body demolition of Jose Luis Castillo was impressive but…Castillo was done.
Malignaggi cannot break an egg and has only five stoppages. EDGE: HATTON

SPEED: Hatton has underrated speed. He has an ability to cut the ring off and can make things into a
brawl. Malignaggi isn’t a speed demon despite his style. He employs a lot of cutesy moves and
positional strategies. EDGE: EVEN

OUTCOME: A damn tough fight to pick. I’m going with Malignaggi by the slimmest of margins.
Hatton only dominates against spent bullets (Castillo, Juan Lazcano, and even Kostya Tszyu). He has
a live dog in front of him in Malignaggi. The money or house fighter is Hatton, however, as a possible
big payday against the winner of Delahoya-Pacquiao awaits. But my hunch is that Malignaggi needs
this victory more than Hatton.

Prediction: MALIGNAGGI MD12 HATTON
