Rosendo José Álvarez Hernández (born May 6, 1970 in Managua, Nicaragua) is a flyweight boxer, and is
well known for giving Mexican legend Ricardo Lopez two tough fights. He is the only person to hold the
undefeated flyweight champion to a draw.

Professional career
He won the World Boxing Association strawweight title by close split decision over Thai fighter Chana
Porpaoin. He defended his title by knockout over former and future champs Songkram Porpaoin (twin
brother of Chana) and Kermin Guardia. He also decisioned veteran Eric Chavez and stopped undefeated
prospect Takashi Shiohama in defense of his crown. In 1997, he fought to a draw with undefeated reigning
WBC champ and pound-for-pound ranked Ricardo Lopez, dropping Lopez for the first and only time in his
career. He lost a split decision to Lopez in the rematch, although he failed to make weight before the fight.
He was stripped of the title and the two met at an over the 105-pound strawweight limit, with the WBA title
being on the line for Lopez only.

Alvarez then moved up to the 108 lb division. He lost by seventh round disqualification to Antonio "Bebis"
Mendoza for the vacant WBA light flyweight title. He later avenged this loss by twelve round split decision.
As champ he defeated former champ Pichit Siriwat by 12th round TKO and won two decisions over
Mendoza. He fought to a twelve round draw against then-IBF champ Jose Victor Burgos.

Alvarez moved up to the flyweight division where, after a few tune-up fights, was stopped in six rounds by
Jorge Arce.

Retirement
Alvarez is an influential promoter and manager in his native Nicaragua and it is assumed that the Arce fight
was his last effort as a comabatant.
